Wikipedia Writing

Writing a wikipedia stub was interesting in the least. It was incredibly difficult to find a stub in the first place which was relevant and interesting to me. Once I did, the rest was easy. I will admit the help screen was open in another window the entire time i was writing to make it easier to understand the script and the code of wikipedia. However I did figure out how to write properly eventually and the writing of a wikipedia stub commenced. Not going to lie though, It wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be. Somehow, adding to millions of people's writings just doesn't have the same ring to it when I actually went to do it.

However I do see the good in wikipedia. Although some people may change things based on bias or just for fun, the idea is good in the way that there is always someone who needs to find something quickly and easily and who may not have access to a peer reviewed journal. Wikipedia is perfect for people like this as it is free and easy to use. Also, regardless of what you are looking for, it is most likely that there is a wiki page dedicated to it.

So even though I have had multiple issues with seemingly all technology, I have decided Wikipedia is lovely and helpful. Helpful for people like me who can't turn on a DVD player without zapping herself, and lovely for everyone, tech savvy or not. Thank you Wikipedia for making my searches easier.

For all you tech people out there, I apologize. I am a talking girl through and through. Although I do understand the importance of using technology to create and connect, I still think the most important skill people can have is to be able to speak.

I know so many people who have issues speaking to other people. My little brother for example, cannot speak to a stranger if his life depended on it. He can't even pick up the phone to call for a pizza (that's become my job). However, the 15 year old can defrag a modem in record time. How much is that going to help him in later life though? Without speech, people will have issues partaking in interviews, buisness proposals, even presentations at school. I find that the ability to not only speak well but be comfortable with it is not only a rare commodity in this technological world, but it is also rapidly dwindling. In highschools (I have seen this first hand) kids sit in class with their phones on their laps texting their friends. So you say, what's wrong with communicating with friends? Friends are good. Yes, but these kids are choosing to spend their time talking to these friends in completely monotone text when they are going to see them in the next half an hour anyway! And whats more is that they are not paying attention to more important matters such as their schoolwork.

Now everybody with the ability to speak to strangers without breaking a sweat knows that once in a while we are told that we talk too much. But I ask these anti-talkers, is that really so bad? Ask yourself that question when the girl who you thought talked too much gets a job over you because she aced her job interview and you sweat patches through your shirt.

Good Luck Fellow Speakers!

Hello all! Take a look at my buisness profile/page on Facebook. Facebook seems like something to use for talking to friends or making events to keep in touch. However, Facebook can also be used as an electronic buisness card. Potential employers can look at a person's buisness Facebook page and they can tell alot about a person, just as they would be able to do if they were to read a resume. This is a more environmentally friendly way of communicating in a buisness sense because there would be less trees killed from many pages of resumes printed out over the years. Also, it provides a easier path for the employer to see what the person is capable of doing.

Writing styles are also shown in the Facebook profiles. A person who cannot write cannot give off a good impression via they're resume, and through that, they will not be able to make an impression when the employer reads the posts and information on the Facebook profile. So Facebook is more than just a communication method for keeping in touch with friends. Facebook can be used to potentially get the job of your dreams!

Welcome One and All

Welcome to my new blog. My name is Leigh Katherine Melligan and I am currently attending the University of Alberta. I am studying Animal Health, with a major in Companion and Performance Animals. I am in second year, and am quite excited to be using a blog as before ALES 204, I would not consider myself "tech savvy".

I hope this blog can be of use to me and all my readers, as in my field, communication plays a vital role. How else would a veterinarian be able to find a cure to some of the more uncommon diseases except through large scientific journals which publish new findings? Or if a beloved pet needs a blood test, where do the vets go to get the results? They would run the tests and then the results are communicated electronically to a lab where they are analyzed, then sent back to the vet, and back to you. This is why I think communication is important, and this is why I hope that this blog can be as useful to you and I as a lab for a blood test.
Thanks a Zillion :)
